Mr. Hanley’s practice focuses on patent infringement litigation, but he has broad-based intellectual property litigation experience that includes trade secret, trademark, trade dress and design patent cases.  In 2002, Mr. Hanley won a jury verdict of $47.5 million, the fourth largest jury verdict in an intellectual property case that year, as lead counsel for the plaintiffs in Applera Corp. v. Micromass UK Ltd. (D. Del. 2002).

Mr. Hanley has represented clients in cases spanning a variety of complex technologies, including mass spectrometry and other analytical instrument technologies, medical devices, telecommunications, computer hardware and software, and satellite systems.  Mr. Hanley has appeared in federal courts in numerous jurisdictions around the country and has argued several cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Mr. Hanley also counsels and assists clients on issues relating to the validity, enforceability and infringement of intellectual property rights, and on the procurement and transfer of intellectual property.  Notable clients Mr. Hanley has represented include Applera Corp. (now Life Technologies), Sony Corp., Airbus SAS, Aesculap AG, Applied Materials, BAE Systems PLC, Boston Scientific Corp., MDS Sciex, and Oscar Mayer Foods Corp.

Mr. Hanley is active in bar association work, especially the New York Intellectual Property Lawyers Association, where is he a member of the Board of Directors and past Chair of the Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution, the American Bar Association Sections on Litigation and on Intellectual Property, where he has served on committees on Federal Practice and Procedure and Industrial Design.  He is also active in the Federal Circuit Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association.  Mr. Hanley has presented papers and speeches on numerous topics relating to intellectual property litigation, such as the presentation of damages evidence to juries and managing discovery costs in patent litigation.  He has served as an arbitrator in patent disputes. He is a member of Kenyon’s Management Committee.
